Terry Brown produced Scenes From a Memory, and also provided the voice for the hypnotherapist. When it came time to record the gig at Roseland for a DVD release, Mike asked Terry if he would make an appearance as the hypnotherapist. Terry agreed, but asked for a payment (which is usually standard when appearing in movies/music DVDs), and Mike was a bit miffed that he asked him to appear as a favor and in the end was told he'd have to pay for it.
So a new hypnotherapist was cast, and Terry Brown was given a special NO thanks in the DVD credits. Mike has also said that he will no longer work with Terry on any future projects.
Why is Terry Brown listed as a special NO thanks on the SFAM DVD?
I may be mistaken, but I believe that another issue with Terry Brown was that when ever they used his voice on tour,(everytime regression was played) he wanted money.
Josh is correct. The MP website has a Q and A that explains how Terry asked (after the tour began, I believe) for X amount of money for each time the recording of his voice was played in concert. This peeved Mike since Terry knew going into the recording that the plan would be to play SFAM in full on tour, opening with the recording of Regression, but he waited until the tour was underway before he asked for royalties. That pretty much disqualified Mr. Brown from the DVD appearance, earned him a bit of scorn in the credits, and prevented him from working with this great band in the future.
I guess it's pretty obvious why DT want to self-produce nowadays after this and the whole FII ordeal..
yes.. i agree that was worng but come on who the heck is terry brown to do this to dt??? i mean this guy is no one and he gets this chance with dt to make a stand for him self.. and he blows it by being greedy....prog is not the most main stream kind of music in the u.s.. but i have and allways listen to it and allways will ... prog is not about who gets paid more and who is most popular on mtv... its about the real side of music . inda like pro football and college football, college football has more fans because the players play better and harder and there not ther efor the money... i know this is a insane comment and it probly want be posted but its worth a shot.. terry brown is a looser he should retire while he can say he had the chance to work with dt once .. lol
Interesting that DT is uppity with Terry on this one. Look at the flipside: if I were to sample the drum intro to 6:00, I am sure that Mike and the rest would want to get paid. I do not blame Terry for wanting royalties, but he should have made his royalty stipulations clear in his contract before recording his parts for SFAM.
I DO think it's kind of childish of MP to list a "no thanks"...seriously...so you clashed, big deal. I don't know why they had to draw it on longer. Personally, TB had the right to want a payment.
Woops.... man, I love everything Terry has ever done (his work with Rush obviously), but if he's that much of a money whore, well... Interesting. I used to be rather interested in him as a possible producer...
Well beings it was dream theaters idea to use a narrator in the 1st place I feel Terry should not have asked for money. Now if they asked Terry to do the recording and he "Wel, I will do it for royalties." etc... then I could maybe see him getting royalties for it or performing it, but it was a favor and seems to me that Terry was more than willing to put it on the album without royalties, and I feel since SFAM was a success, Terry asked for money. Anyhow....I too agree that they shouldn't have put no thanks on the video, cause you never know when you might need someone in the future...either way.
Didn't Terry Brown produce the vocals only, and JaM Productions produce the rest of the album? I seem to recall this from the liner notes.
Also, we only have Portnoy's words about what happened, and it's only the first side of the coin, do we know Mr. Browns view on the case?
