Innocence Faded
Author: MysteryGlobal

Animation breathes a cloudless mind
Fascination leaves the doubting blind

Animate: To give interest or zest to; Having life, Alive.
Fascinated: Held motionless; Spellbound

Being animated, or acting upon your convictions, will render your mind clear and ‘cloudless’. Whereas those who sit around always thinking about what they should do, but never take action due to their doubt of their capabilities, or their convictions, will be left ‘blind’ and confused, never feeling at peace.

Until the circle breaks
and wisdom lies ahead
the faithful live Awake
the rest remain misled

The circle may represent the repetitive cycle that some can get caught up in. Until they break their habits of ‘fascination’ they shall remain ‘misled’. In other words they won’t gain the peace and wisdom, or ‘cloudless mind’, of those more animated individuals.

Some will transcend spinning years

Transcend: To pass beyond (a human limit); To exist above and independent of (material experience or the universe)

This line is a reference to those who live Awake. By following and acting upon their convictions they will surpass the material experience of this world and survive on a higher plain, so to speak.

One as if time disappears

Though I’m not entirely sure, this is perhaps a reference to Christ. If the ‘one’ in this line is part of the ‘some’ in the previous line, then Christ certainly fits this description, for he transcends eternally, as if time disappears.

Innocence faded
the mirror falls behind you

The mirror falling represents the unveiling of the hypocrite’s secrets. His innocence has been seen through as only an act.

Trinity jaded
I break down walls to find you

Jaded: Worn-out, fatigued. Made dull by excess.

Often times one who is living a lie will tire of the act. Constantly playing the righteous one can lead to fatigue and boredom with the Holy Trinity, which in this instance probably represents religion in general. Others may first begin to suspect the fading innocence at this point. Thus they break down the walls of deceit which have been built by the hypocrite in order to find the real person and help them grow spiritually.

Callow and vain

Callow: Immature and inexperienced.
Vain: Not yielding the desired outcome, fruitless.

Obviously both references to the hypocrite. Having only pretended, they are not truly growing or yielding results, spiritually. As mentioned earlier, they have been ‘fascinated’ or held motionless, never moving forward.

Fixed like a fossil, shrouding pain
Passionless stage

The fossil is yet another illustration of the absence of growth and the stagnate, non-changing attitude of the person(s). A hypocrite is usually ashamed, at least on some level, and knows he is wrong, but this pain is hidden and suppressed. Also, those who harbor these hypocrisies usually are callused or hardened to emotion... passionless.

Distant like brothers
Wearing apathetic displays
Sharing flesh like envy in cages

This passage is the most difficult for me to decipher. It could be reference to hypocrites within the church regarding each other. Appearing that they don’t have a care or a worry in the world, yet underneath they harbor envy or jealously of some other person(s). The flesh being shared may simply represent sin, and given as an example is the envy which they must cage, or hide, as to not alert others of their charade.

Condescending not intending to end

Condescend: To deal with or treat others in a patronizing way.

These holier-than-thou hypocrites will often look down their noses at others. Though they are some of the least spiritually healthy members of the organization, they may have the outward appearance of being the strongest. The act can become so consuming they actually begin to believe it themselves and see others as inferior. Not intending to end. A person hiding something of such magnitude will usually have to be exposed by some source other than their own admission. They weave such a complicated web of deceit that they could never imagine actually bringing out the truth.

Some will transcend spinning years
One as if time disappears

Innocence faded
the mirror falls behind you
Trinity jaded
I break down walls to find you

Lyrical repetition.

Beginnings get complicated the farther we progress
Opinions are calculated
Immune to openness

This seems like more of a general statement regarding human nature. While we, as a society, are supposedly progressing, the roots of our spirituality are lost to doctrines, rules and politics. We listen less to the heart, and more to what is 'politically correct'.

Beyond the circle's edge
We're driven by her blessings
Forever hesitating
Caught beneath the wheel

The last line of this part is my favorite of the song. If we would only step out of the cyclic rut of self-serving hypocrisy, or circle’s edge, and trade in fascination for animation, we would not be caught beneath the wheel, but free to let it carry us onward.

Innocence faded
the mirror falls behind you

Cynically jaded
The child will crawl to find you

Cynic: One who believes all human action has selfish motives.

I wonder if cynically jaded is self-descriptive of John. As one who has been involved with those who fit this song, I can certainly relate to being worn-out and tired of their charade, and thus bitter and doubtful of any honesty in this world.

The last line may indicate the true level of these hypocrites, as even a child is as spiritually mature as they are for they are callow.

doomsoldier
I think the very last line

"The child will crawl to find you."

refers to the innocence of a newborn. A child has never had the opportunity to sin or become a hypocrite. The inner child (aka. the inner innocence), is searching for the true goodness of the person.

The Potted Plant
Distant like brothers
Wearing apathetic displays
Sharing flesh like envy in cages

I always interpreted this passage as describing how something is distant-- like metaphorical brothers, perhaps within a religious establishment or just humans in general, sharing blood, or flesh, but wearing apathetic displays, as if they don't really care about each other, or as if they don't have so much in common. Caged or hidden envy breeds resentment, probably the cause of the assumed apathy, and which will likely lead to "fascination."
